The Wave Whisperer app does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information.
The app retrieves publicly available ocean buoy data from NOAA's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) and the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP, operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography) directly on your device. No data is sent to our servers. No user accounts are required or created.
Saved history snapshots you capture are stored on your device. On iPhone, they also sync through your own iCloud account (Apple's key-value storage) so your saved history can survive deleting and reinstalling the app. That copy lives in your iCloud, under your Apple Account — it is never sent to our servers, and we cannot see, access, or share it. On Android, saved history is kept on your device. If Google backup is on for your phone, Android may keep a copy in your own Google account and restore it when you reinstall. It is never sent to us.
Location is optional. If you allow it, the app reads your approximate location (about a kilometre) on your phone to rank buoys by distance, to start a new install on the five buoys nearest you, and to align the compass with true north. That reading stays in the app's memory on your device. It is never stored, never sent to our servers, and never shared with anyone. Decline it and every feature still works; you pick your buoys yourself.
Swell fields (individual swells and average period, both off by default) are fetched through a small relay we run on wavewhispererapp.com that caches CDIP's public data. The relay receives the buoy number you asked for and the ordinary connection details any web request carries (such as an IP address), which Cloudflare handles to serve it. We attach no account or identifier to those requests and do not use them to identify you.
This website counts page visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not identify you or follow you across sites. Cloudflare, working for us, sees the ordinary details any web request carries (such as an IP address and the referring page) and gives us totals only, such as pages viewed, referring sites, and countries. The app contains no analytics.
Links we post that begin with itmt.link count how many times each link is opened, and whether the opener looks like a person or an automated program. No IP address, cookie, or identifier is stored.
The Wave Whisperer app contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or crash reporting SDKs. Visit counting on this website is described under This Website.
Wave Whisperer offers a one-time in-app purchase (a $1.99 unlock following a free trial). Purchases are processed entirely by the app store's billing system (Apple or Google). We do not collect, receive, or store your payment details. The app keeps only a local record of your free-trial start and whether the unlock has been purchased; that record stays on your device.
The app fetches data from public API endpoints operated by NOAA's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) and the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP, Scripps Institution of Oceanography). These are public data sources, not data processors for Wave Whisperer. No personal information is shared with NOAA, CDIP, or any other third party.
Cloudflare hosts this website and our data relay, and counts website visits for us, as our service provider. We do not sell or share personal information with anyone.
Wave Whisperer does not collect data from any user, including children under 13.
Because we collect no personal data, there is nothing to retain or delete on our end. Saved history snapshots — on your device and, on iPhone, in your own iCloud — can be deleted at any time within the app.
